Keeping children safe in sport
Taking part in sport and play and being active is an essential part of a child’s health and development. That’s why we want to create and maintain a safe and enjoyable environment for all children who take part in sport or play activities provided by North Lincolnshire Council Leisure Services.

Our commitment
- Recruitment of staff and volunteers: All our staff and volunteers who work with children are recruited through a proper recruitment and selection process. This includes interviews, references and screening through an Enhanced Criminal Records Bureau check.
- Training: All our staff and volunteers who work with children have a recognised qualification and have training in safeguarding children and health and safety procedures.
- Code of conduct and behaviour: We have a written code of conduct and behaviour stating what we require of our staff, volunteers, children, parents or carers.
- Photography, mobile phones and websites: We have guidelines in place to help prevent anyone taking inappropriate photographs or film footage of children in vulnerable situations.
- Worries or concerns: We report any concerns about the safety and welfare of a child to North Lincolnshire Council Children’s Services.
- Comments: We want to know and promise to act on any comments you have about safeguarding children.

Advice for parents and carers
You as a parent or carer play an important part in protecting your child from harm. The information you provide and the example you set can give them the knowledge and confidence needed to speak out about threatening or potentially harmful situations. And it is your right as a parent or carer to be able to check on how well sport or play activities you want your child to attend are being run. The Department for Culture Media and Sport has produced guidance (PDF 248kb) on questions to ask and what to look for when choosing an activity.
