The awards ceremony

To reward and recognise the outstanding achievements that volunteers have made in leisure, the Leisure Awards took place on 14 March 2007 at Ancholme Leisure Centre. This year, like previous years, was extremely successful and 19 people won awards.

The awards resulted from voting that saw nominations from leisure, art and community groups, and individuals in North Lincolnshire. Awards were given in the following categories:

  • Young Sports Achiever of the Year
  • Young Disabled Volunteer of the Year
  • Coach of the Year
  • Volunteer of the Year
  • Young Volunteer of the Year
  • Community Organisation of the Year
  • Sports Club of the year
  • Community Building of the Year
  • Lifetime Achievement Award
  • Community Impact of the Year

Special guest Geoff Capes the most capped British male athlete of all time having held the British and Commonwealth shot putt record for 23 years, presented winners with their awards.

Sue Gilroy, Table Tennis Double Commonwealth Champion and European champion gave an inspirational speech about her achievements and the value of volunteers.

David Gent from Sport England also attended and launched the Active Choices Active Futures strategy in the aim to increase participation in sport and active recreation by one per cent each year.
