North Lincolnshire Leisure Volunteer Awards 2006

MADANI YOUTH ORGANISATION - Voluntary Group CONGRATULATIONS to all nominees, runners up and winners of the North Lincolnshire Leisure Volunteer Awards 2006.

It was a fantastic evening with representatives from the whole community. Dave Gent (Sport England) and John Anderson (Gladiators referee) made inspiring speeches. John Anderson, Mayor Eckhardt and Malcolm Marsall (Crosby Community Association) presented the awards.

A big thank you goes out to Sue Mumby (Sports Development Officer – Active Schools) for her dedication and commitment to leading the organisation of the event. We also thank everyone who made the evening a success. We are already looking forward to next years’ Awards!

The runners up and winners of the North Lincolnshire Leisure Volunteers Awards 2006 are presented below:

Sports Club of the Year

 

Winner: BOTTESFORD TOWN FOOTBALL CLUB

Many clubs were nominated for this award and it was very difficult to reach a decision.

The club has achieved the Football Association Community Club Award and has committed itself to adhering to its ethics.

The club also operates an open door policy that has enabled numbers to grow year on year. The club has over 300 participants in its various teams.

Runner Up: KODOKAN JUDO CLUB

Lifetime Achievement Award – Sports

Winner: ROY FENWICK

Roy Fenwick - Lifetime Achievement AwardRoy has been involved in local football for over 5 years, forming Crosby Colts back in 1950 as a street team.

He has also been instrumental in the development of the Jack Kalson Junior League, establishing an excellent reputation throughout the county.

On top of all this Roy is Centre Organiser for the British Red Cross, responsible for first aid training to all sports teams within the area.

Runner Up: HARRY AND JANET SLATER

Coach of the Year

 

Winner: SIMON BACHELOR
Simon has shown commitment and absolute dedication to the Kodokan Judo Club over the past 12 months by attending competitions up and down the country.

 

His efforts are the main reason that the British Squad players have increased from 3 to 5.

Runner Up: ANDREW CORCORAN

Young Sports Achiever of the Year

Winner: EMILY HICKMAN
Over the past year Emily has produced numerous outstanding performances, the likes of which have never been seen in the history of Kodokan Judo Club.

 

Emily has become the National Champion for the second year running, and competed in 14 tournaments, winning 11 gold medals.

Runner up: KATIE FLOWER

Disabled Volunteer of the Year

Winner: JON DALE
Jon Dale - disabled Volaunteer of the YearJon has been volunteering at “Scorers” Youth Club for 3 years, and has gone on to pass the Junior Sports Leaders Award.

 

Jon is a very reliable and responsible member of the sports hall staff team and his contributions to the smooth running of sessions is invaluable.

In addition, he has also undertaken voluntary work for several years with the Magic Moments Group, a group for children with autism, even accompanying the group to the Great North Run.

Volunteer of the Year - Sports – Male

Winner: DENNIS WADD
Dennis has been a club official at Appleby Frodingham Cricket Club for 50 years, fulfilling the role of scorer for 48 years and is a lifetime member of the Lincolnshire Cricket League.

 

Dennis is also the manger of Crosby Colts Football Club Reserves; his association with the club goes back 20 years.

His passion extends to Ten Pin Bowling and is involved with the administration of the local league.

Dennis performs all of these roles voluntarily and without hesitation.

Runner Up: VINCE LOBLEY

Volunteer of the Year – Sports – Female

Winner: ANNE WHITE
For over 30 years Anne has helped members of the Scunthorpe Remedial Recreation Club. Countless members have benefited throughout this time from Anne’s pleasant and encouraging personality.

 

Whatever the age, be it 9 or 90, Anne has provided opportunities for patients to learn to swim for the first time, allowing them to experience the benefits of physical exercise.

Young Volunteer of the Year – Sports

Winner: SARAH SUNDARAM
Despite being only 16 years of age, Sarah’s enthusiasm and ability to converse with youngsters has proved vital to the clubs aim to gain a focus club status.

 

Sarah has already achieved her English Cricket Board Level 1 and 2 and regularly umpires and scores matches. She always gives up her spare time without a second thought to assist in the running of junior teams.

Sarah is also a member of the Wakefield Ladies team playing in the Northern Premier Division and the successful Yorkshire U17 team. Sarah has recently been accepted to the Senior Yorkshire team and the North of England Development Squad.

Runner Up: Emma Mallender

Community Organisation of the Year (3 categories for this group)

1. Outstanding Contribution

Winner: CROSBY COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION

In recognising their unique contribution within the voluntary sector, it was decided that Crosby Community Association should be awarded a trophy for their outstanding contribution as a community organisation.

In its work, Crosby Community Association provides for local people:
• A drop in centre
• Welfare rights advice
• Debt counselling
• Provision of clothing
• Transport

In addition, it is also involved in the running of 5 after school clubs.

From beginnings as a small voluntary organisation, it has now grown to employ 17 people on a full-time basis and is supported by 20 volunteers.

2. Voluntary Group

Winner: MADANI YOUTH ORGANISATION
The organisation continues to go from strength to strength, engaging over 150 people per week in sport and recreational activities.

 

Madani Youth Organisation engages sections of the community that have been socially excluded in the past. The group has also been building the capacity of its volunteers through training, education and leadership courses.

Madani Youth Organisation is an organisation set up and led by the community to meet the needs and demands of the community.

Runner Up: BOTTESFORD AND YADDLETHORPE FRIENDSHIP CLUB

3. Community Arts Group

Winner: RISING STARS OF SCUNTHORPE LITTLE THEATRE GROUP

The group recognises the virtues and advantages of being small scale, in particular a mutually supportive ethos.

In the space of 12 months the club has established itself in such a way that it has already achieved three successful grant applications.

The club has a planned public performance of ‘The Flood’ for the summer of 2006.

Community Impact of the Year

Winner: THE FORGE
The organisation has overcome financial difficulties and low staff numbers, to make a positive impact to the lives of the community.

 

The community are helped through their difficulties thanks to a small dedicated group of people who make a difference.

Community Building of the Year

Winner: BOTTESFORD AND YADDLETHORPE HALL
The hall was built with money raised in 1972 and is now managed by a voluntary committee.

 

Recent improvements to the buildings have seen refurbishments of male and female toilets including facilities for people with disabilities.

The hall is used every day from pre-school groups through to senior citizen groups.

Runner Up: CROWLE AND EALAND PLAYING FIELD ASSOCIATION

Lifetime Achievement Award - Arts

Winner: GEORGE HANKINSON
Dedication, vision and ready wit are just some of the qualities that George has brought to The Little Theatre Club, enabling its on and off stage successes possible.

 

George has performed endless roles within the club including chairman, secretary, set designer as well as painter. He has served bodies including the Arts Council, however, it is a flourishing director that George is best known.

Volunteer of the Year – Arts

Winner: NORMA THORPE
Norma has volunteered at Normanby Hall since September 1999. She has mostly brought her expertise to bear on the costume and textile collection.

 

She has been the driving force behind the last six costume exhibitions at Normanby Hall and has done much to improve the quality of displays.

For the past 3 years Norma has led a team from the National Association of Decorative and Fine Arts Societies in helping to conserve and display costume accessories and other textiles.

Norma has shared her expertise to the benefit of staff and volunteers.

Without Norma’s expertise and commitment the North Lincolnshire Museums Service Collection would be in a much poorer condition.

Runner Up: STACEY JOHNSON

Young Volunteer of the Year – Arts

Winner: ROSIE HAIGH
Rosie is an active member of Brigg Music Club, and has quickly proved to be a highly skilled and hard working member.

 

Her talents have also extended to recruiting other crew members as well as scouting. Rosie has also won awards for her guitar skills.


The following North Lincolnshire Step into Sport Students also received a certificate recognising their efforts in providing voluntary hours to sports clubs.
